Let’s eat and drink for tomorrow we die. Fine, thought St Paul (tongue in cheek) if this life is all there is, (1 Corinthians 15, 32<\/strong>. What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought wild beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, \u201cLet us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die\u201d. )
\nBut if there is<\/em> a life beyond and a judgement beforehand, God thinks this is a very bad guide to life.
\nIsaiah 22. 12, 13<\/strong>. In that day the Lord, the Lord God of hosts called for weeping and mourning, for baldness and wearing sackcloth; and behold, joy and gladness, killing oxen and slaughtering of sheep, eating flesh and drinking of wine.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet us eat and drink,
\nFor tomorrow we die.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For many people today, this is their guide to life. How do we get inside their head? How can we shock them into sense? It\u2019s the Spirit\u2019s work, but He uses us.
\nI wrote this a few days ago\u2014the idea came to me on a train\u2014don\u2019t know why:<\/p>\n

Recite this out loud<\/strong>:
\nLet’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.
\nIf we like, though, let’s diet, for appearances’ sake
\nAnd when the mood takes us, be civilised,
\nUnless the mood takes us, otherwise.
\nBut let us not make many waves, not shake
\nThe foundations, don’t start.
\nLet’s keep calm and our comfort at heart,
\nFor tomorrow we die.
\nLet’s, as a side effect, rape the whole Earth,
\nReluctantly take her for all she’s worth.
\nLet’s not ask, why not? Let’s milk her dry,
\nFor tomorrow we die.\u2028Let us not think of the stroke of midnight.
\nStuff the glass slippers, the coachmen turned mice.
\nLet’s have a do like– there is no tomorrow;
\nTomorrow we die.
\nLet me love you, the ones who are closest to me,
\nBut the deal only comes with a guarantee,
\nYou don’t clip my wings, I’m free to fly
\nFor tomorrow I die.<\/p>\n

And when it’s too late and we’re in it too deep,
\nLet’s have second thoughts, and think, “Oh, no, not yet.”
\nThen let’s start the weeping and gnashing of teeth,
\nAnd eternal regret.<\/span><\/p>\n
