Re-Read Code Ode 13: Guilty Feelings (Part I)<\/a><\/p>\n

Recite this out loud:<\/strong>
\nIs there someone out there
\nWho could pay the victims\u2019 cost forever?
\nSo that all\u2019s not lost forever;
\nWho could stand for justice, giving
\nTo that empty word a meaning,
\nYet forgiving an oppressor, cleaning
\nOff their slate once earthly dues are paid
\nAnd dealing with their conscience,
\nClearing this without demeaning
\nAll the victims\u2019 dignity.
\nFor, if this is off the cards
\nThere is no final hope for victims
\nOr oppressors or, with due regards
\nTo our cold apathy, no hope for us,
\nWhen, to a victim we say \u2018no.\u2019
\nIn fact, the summing up will show,
\nAmongst the victims and oppressors,
\nOver time we\u2019ve all been both.<\/p>\n

How could that someone have the right
\nTo meet the needs of justice on behalf
\nOf all the victims, solve their plight?
\nWho could play the other\u2019s part?
\nOnly one who was the guard
\nOf justice and who was its heart.
\nSo when, for justice we cry out,
\nIt\u2019s just an echo of his thunderous shout.
\nHow then, could he break the yoke
\nOf victims\u2019 bitterness and grief,
\nOppressors\u2019 guilt and free them both?
\nTo make it real, not just symbolic make believe,
\nAll victims\u2019 pains would be his pain;
\nAnd more– his bearing it would be
\nEnough to murder our disdain.
\nHe\u2019d have to love each victim more
\nThan any victims loved themselves.
\nA mother\u2019s bond with those she bore,
\nTo this, a shadow, nothing more.
\nAnd we as victims and oppressors both
\nWould need that love held out to all.
\nOnce owned up to their helplessness
\nThe cruellest hands which then would grope
\nWould still be offered mercy, given hope<\/p>\n

But for justice to be real,
\n(Not like some dad, so meek and mild
\nHe\u2019s helpless, impotent
\nBefore a wilful, tyrant child),
\nThe hands that closed against the offer
\nWould be cast aside forever,
\nOutside where, unchained \u2013that\u2019s never
\nChecked, restrained or changed by love,
\nOppressor feeds upon oppressor.
\nFor his head to be held high
\nBefore all victims, and satisfy
\nThe price of justice, that someone
\nWould have to be a victim and as one,
\nBoth live and die.
\nBut die unjustly as a victim, plain;
\nWith no oppressor\u2019s part to play,
\nSo for himself, no price to pay,
\nSo paying that due from us all.
\nFor right to win out over wrong
\nAnd love prove strongest of the strong
\nAnd hope become a guarantee,
\nThat someone would have to be
\nThe one who took on death
\nWhose steel unbending
\nHe could bend and break,
\nTo offer all, new life unending.<\/p>\n

Who could carry this eternal can?
\nOnly one who is both perfect God
\nAnd lived as perfect man.
\nThen the measure of my worth would be
\nHis likeness in, and love for me.
\nAnd when through mists I dimly see
\nWhat He intended me to be,
\nMyself compared now with that treasure
\nShows my guilt was beyond measure,
\nAs was all he did for me
\nTo end that guilt and set me free.<\/p>\n
