{"id":4525,"date":"2013-08-07T09:00:03","date_gmt":"2013-08-07T09:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cvm.org.uk\/blog\/?p=4525"},"modified":"2016-01-06T14:56:21","modified_gmt":"2016-01-06T14:56:21","slug":"code-ode-13-guilty-feelings-pt-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cvm.org.uk\/blog\/friends-of-cvm\/code-ode-13-guilty-feelings-pt-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Code Ode 13: Guilty Feelings Pt.1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Read this: <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;My guilt overwhelms me &#8211; it is a burden too heavy to bear.&#8221;<br \/>\nPsalm 38 v 4<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Recite this out loud:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We can sometimes feel a sense of guilt.<br \/>\nIs it a thing in-built,<br \/>\nA feeling of real guilt<br \/>\nOr just a guilty feeling?<br \/>\nIs the guilt the thing<br \/>\nOr is the thing the feeling?<br \/>\nIs it an independent thing<br \/>\nNot dependent on our feelings,<br \/>\nThey themselves dependent<br \/>\nOn a host of random things,<br \/>\nAnd some names we can\u2019t forget,<br \/>\nWhich people say, \u2018life brings\u2019,<br \/>\nOf which to be ashamed or to regret,<br \/>\nOr of which to boast<br \/>\nOn a springboard of elation,<br \/>\nOr to sense an irritation,<br \/>\nMelting rarely to compassion,<br \/>\nDrowning sometimes in depression,<br \/>\nOn occasion feeling passion<br \/>\nEven to the point of temper,<br \/>\nAnd the whole thing being tempered<br \/>\nNot surprisingly by alcohol (or music)<br \/>\nOr worse, a heady mixture of the two!<\/p>\n<p>But, to unpick this \u2018guilt\u2019, to analyse,<br \/>\nLook with dissectors\u2019 eyes;<br \/>\nIs it a fear that drives<br \/>\nThis whirlpool which, once entered,<br \/>\nSucks us into ever deeper confines<br \/>\nEver darker, to its centre?<br \/>\nOr is it shame, which provides the motive force?<br \/>\nIs shame the driver of remorse?<br \/>\nFear or shame, I ask the same\u2014of what?<br \/>\nEmbarrassment and pain of being found out?<br \/>\nAll too often, yes, and not<br \/>\nEmbarrassment and pain that we\u2019ve dealt out.<br \/>\nBut that\u2019s not guilt, that\u2019s only self-defence.<br \/>\nGuilt must recognise, a victim\u2019s loss.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s real, beyond anything we feel;<br \/>\nIt\u2019s still there when we don\u2019t give a toss.<br \/>\nSo&#8211; our guilt is measured only by their cost?<br \/>\nBut that can never be completely met<br \/>\nBy us, who can\u2019t completely ease their pain.<br \/>\nAnd supposing that were done, we\u2019d still have yet<br \/>\nTo deal with our disdain.<\/p>\n<p>I somehow know there must be something more,<br \/>\nTo empty out guilt\u2019s store,<br \/>\nWhich might outrank, might come before,<br \/>\nBe deeper even, than a victim\u2019s pain;<br \/>\nIn fact would demonstrate the pain\u2019s full meaning,<br \/>\nPast depths of despair, beyond even screaming,<br \/>\nBy agreeing, people\u2019s worth<br \/>\nIs measured not just by their suffering.<br \/>\nWhen eye has been exchanged for eye<br \/>\nAnd tooth for tooth,<br \/>\nIs that then it?<br \/>\nThere must be more still to the truth.<br \/>\nA life is worth more than a world of pain<br \/>\nAnd we, if we became one, would exclaim<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m more than a victim, I am Me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And what of victims cruelly wronged;<br \/>\nRaped, sold into sexual slavery,<br \/>\nOr as a child<br \/>\nForced, at gun point, to kill<br \/>\nAnd then to sing the songs<br \/>\nOf rebel armies and run wild?<br \/>\nAll at the hands of those who prosper,<br \/>\nUp until their victims die,<br \/>\nVoiceless, powerless,<br \/>\nWhose words evaporate into the sky,<br \/>\nWith no advocate to deal with their distress.<br \/>\nAnd their oppressors?<br \/>\nThey meet only with success.<\/p>\n<p>So, what of that? Is it, \u201cso what\u201d?<br \/>\nFor those victims, is that all?<br \/>\nIs that enough?<br \/>\nIs the final answer, echoing down the Universe\u2014<br \/>\nWell, tough?<br \/>\nIf that\u2019s the case, then in the end,<br \/>\n(For all rule lies then with the strong)<br \/>\nDon\u2019t waste your time or mine<br \/>\nWith talk of right or wrong<br \/>\nOr \u201cshould\u201d or \u201cought.\u201d<br \/>\nFor them, \u201cwrong,\u201d\u201d strong,\u201d is all the same&#8211; it\u2019s won!<br \/>\nAnd in the cruel oppressor\u2019s eyes, and ours<br \/>\nThey count for nought,<br \/>\nAnd never will, forgotten or ignored;<br \/>\nAnd what a stroke of luck, no more than that,<br \/>\nThat they are \u201cthey\u201dand are not me or you.<br \/>\nAnd, if only luck keeps us,<br \/>\nOut of their shoes,<br \/>\nKeeps us from being used,<br \/>\nThen in the final reckoning<br \/>\nWe too don\u2019t count for anything.<br \/>\nAnd yet\u2014we think we do!<\/p>\n<p>This thought should send us reeling<br \/>\nFor if we have real worth<br \/>\nThere\u2019s real guilt as well as feeling.<\/p>\n<div class=\"linkwithin_hook\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cvm.org.uk\/blog\/friends-of-cvm\/code-ode-13-guilty-feelings-pt-1\/\"><\/div><script>\n<!-- \/\/LinkWithinCodeStart\nvar linkwithin_site_id = 897245;\nvar linkwithin_div_class = \"linkwithin_hook\";\n\/\/LinkWithinCodeEnd -->\n<\/script>\n<script src=\"http:\/\/www.linkwithin.com\/widget.js\"><\/script>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkwithin.com\/\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.linkwithin.com\/pixel.png?w=750\" alt=\"Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...\" style=\"border: 0\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read this: &#8220;My guilt overwhelms me &#8211; it is a burden too heavy to bear.&#8221; Psalm 38 v 4 Recite this out loud: We can sometimes feel a sense of guilt.
