{"id":4017,"date":"2013-04-03T09:00:48","date_gmt":"2013-04-03T09:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cvm.org.uk\/blog\/?p=4017"},"modified":"2015-02-16T10:31:30","modified_gmt":"2015-02-16T10:31:30","slug":"code-ode-9-seagulls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cvm.org.uk\/blog\/friends-of-cvm\/code-ode-9-seagulls\/","title":{"rendered":"Code Ode 9: Seagulls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Recite this out loud:<\/strong><br \/>\nSeagulls flying, crying, crying<br \/>\nTo the wind, to its sighing,<br \/>\nEagle-eyed, (seagull-eyed),<br \/>\nWatching, spying<br \/>\nOn a man cooking fish.<\/p>\n<p>Seagulls calling, never falling<br \/>\nFrom their flight, never stalling<br \/>\nOn the wind, till from the wind<br \/>\nLanding, standing<br \/>\nBy the man cooking fish.<\/p>\n<p>But unless<br \/>\nThere is a screaming,<br \/>\nStormy day or worse<br \/>\nI guess<br \/>\nA gull has lesser meaning,<br \/>\nYet its glory seems a curse<\/p>\n<p>What used to be<br \/>\nReduced to be<br \/>\nA hopping, perching, lurching,<br \/>\nFlopping, scrapping, flapping<br \/>\nBunch of feathers<br \/>\nIn still weather<br \/>\nBy the sea.<\/p>\n<p>Yet from weight<br \/>\nBy the wind set free,<br \/>\nCareless now of gravity,<br \/>\nIts fate<br \/>\nWill always be<br \/>\nSlave to the wind\u2019s depravity.<\/p>\n<p>Without fail<br \/>\nForced to sale<br \/>\nUpwind hauling, mauling,<br \/>\nDownwind sliding, gliding,<br \/>\nEver soaring<br \/>\nOn the roaring<br \/>\nOf the gale.<\/p>\n<p>Stranger still,<br \/>\nThe human story<br \/>\nSeems to me to be perverse.<br \/>\nOur free will,<br \/>\nThat seems a glory<br \/>\nWhich we\u2019ve turned into a curse.<\/p>\n<p>Free to choose<br \/>\nOr to abuse<br \/>\nThat freedom in dissenting<br \/>\nFrom the best and so preventing<br \/>\nWhat we could be<br \/>\nAnd the good we<br \/>\nNow must lose.<\/p>\n<p>As part of all<br \/>\nWe hold most dearly,<br \/>\nFreedom cannot be divorced.<br \/>\nAt heart of love<br \/>\nLies freedom, clearly<br \/>\nLove\u2019s not love if love be forced.<\/p>\n<p>But what fate<br \/>\nBefalls those left<br \/>\nWhen selfish freedom\u2019s had its way?<br \/>\nBy our great<br \/>\nSelf-love, bereft<br \/>\nOf life, they never had their say.<\/p>\n<p>All that\u2019s lost,<br \/>\nAll the cost<br \/>\nOf freedom needs repaying<br \/>\nOr a human life I\u2019m saying,<br \/>\nIs so cheap,<br \/>\nOn fish-head heaps<br \/>\n<em>We\u2019re<\/em> tossed.<\/p>\n<p>And can we<br \/>\nBe truly free<br \/>\nAt heart of our humanity?<br \/>\nOr will we<br \/>\nForever be<br \/>\nSlaves to the heart\u2019s true vanity?<\/p>\n<p>Once, a man<br \/>\nSaid, \u2018I AM;<br \/>\nI am the problem\u2019s answer.\u2019<br \/>\nSurely madman, bad man, chancer?<br \/>\nThen he died,<br \/>\nCrucified.<br \/>\nSad man!<\/p>\n<p>All one night his friends went fishing<br \/>\nClose inshore, perhaps were wishing<br \/>\nHe were there. Ashore, they stare;<br \/>\nWith seagulls, spying<br \/>\nOn the frying.<br \/>\nIt is him!
