Great Britain sit second in the Paralympics medals table with 15 gold medals after the first four days of competition.

Britain’s David Weir wrapped up the weekend’s action, surging down the final straight to win the men’s 5000m T54 final.

Alan Oliveira upset the odds as well as his opponents in the men’s 200m T44 final, overhauling Oscar Pistorius in the home straight. Pistorius was unhappy with the length Oliveira’s blades, saying “we are not running a fair race here”.

Anthony Kappes and Craig MacLean won beat fellow Brits Neil Fachie and Barney Storey in the men’s individual B sprint final. In the pool, Jessica-Jane Applegate in the women’s 200m freestyle S14.

Robin van Persie scored a hattrick to rescue the points for Manchester United against Southampton at the St Mary’s stadium.

Morgan Schneiderlin had put the Saints ahead after van Persie had cancelled out Rickie Lambert’s opener and the Dutchman scored two more in the dying minutes after missing a penalty midway through the second half.

Arsenal finally scored their first goals of the season in a 2-0 against Liverpool at Anfield. Summer signings Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla were on the scoresheet for Arsenal.

Hatem Ben Arfa hit a wonderful strike to earn a point for Newcastle against a much-improved Aston Villa side who were put ahead by Ciaran Clark.

On Saturday, Manchester City eased to a 3-1 win over QPR. Spurs draw thanks to a late Robert Snodgrass equaliser for Norwich after Moussa Dembele had put the Londoners in front on debut.

Jenson Button eased to victory in the Belgian Grand Prix ahead of Sebatian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso were both forced to retire after Romain Grosjean caused a huge pile-up at the first corner.

England regained their one-day world number one ranking from South Africa on Friday and followed that up with a six-wickets win at Lords yesterday to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Ian Bell scored 88 in a run chase which the home side managed to wrap up with more than three overs to spare.

Laura Robson was finally knocked out of the US Open 6-4 6-4 by defending Sam Stosur. Robson had beaten Kim Clijsters and Li Na to reach the fourth round.

Andy Murray won three tie-breaks to beat Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 7-6 (7-4) and make it into the second week at Flushing Meadows.

Champions Harlequins scored 29 unanswered points to come back from 40-13 down to win 42-40 against Wasps on the first day of the Premiership season

Exeter registered the most convincing victoy of the weekend, beating Sale 43-6 and top the table at the earliest of stages.

Wigan came back from 26-0 down to beat Hull KR 42-36 to secure the Super League Leaders’ Shield.

Hull went ahead through tries from Craig Hall, Lincoln Withers, Ben Galea and Jake Webster had all scored but Brett Finch and Darrell Goulding scored to make it 26-12 before half-time before mounting a superb fightback in the second period.

Defeat left Hull KR out of the running for the final playoff place. That was eventually won by Wakefield, who beat Widnes 22-18 as Bradford also were thrashed 70-6 at home to Hull.

Liverpool recovered from last weekend’s opening day defeat to West Brom to draw 2-2 with champions Manchester City at Anfield, despite gifting their opponents both of their goals.

Martin Skrtel, who had put the home side ahead with a bullet header in the first half, played the ball straight into the path of Carlos Tevez when attempting a pass back to his goalkeeper and Tevez calmly rounded Reina to score City’s second equaliser.

Their first was put in by Yaya Toure who capitalised on poor control in the box by Martin Kelly to score from close range. Luis Suarez regained the lead for Liverpool minutes later with a free-kick before Skrtel’s error gave City a lifeline.

Arsenal’s slow start to the season continued at home to Stoke on Sunday. The match finished 0-0 with neither side posing much of an attacking threat as Arsenal still seek their first goal of the season.

Robin van Persie marked his home debut with a goal as Manchester United beat Fulham 3-2. Wayne Rooney left the field on a stretcher with a gash to the leg which could keep him out for four weeks.

Eden Hazard’s great start to his time at Chelsea continued against Newcastle. His side won 2-0 and Hazard scored a penalty and set up Fernando Torres for his side’s second goal.

Hamphire won the FL t20 title for the second time in three years with a 10-run victory over Yorkshire on Saturday.

Yorkshire were unable to match Hampshire’s score of 150-6, despite David Miller hitting five sixes as part of an unbeaten 72 from 46 balls.

Jonny bairstow was the star of Yorkshire’s semi-final against Sussex, scoring 68 not out as part of his side’s score of 172-6. Sussex fell short by 36 runs.

Hampshire beat Somerset by six wickets in their semi-final, knocking off their opponents’ score of 125 runs with an over to spare.

Warrington won their third Challenge Cup in four years against Leeds at Wembley.

Tries from Joel Monaghan and Trent Waterhouse gave Warrington a 12-10 lead at half-time and Chris Riley, Tyrone McCarthy and Ryan Atkins went over in the second half as they stretched their lead.

Ian Kirke had scored for Leeds in the first half, and Kallum Watkins added two scores late in the second half but they never put Warrington’s victory in doubt.

Paul Lawrie won the Johnny Walker Championship at Gleneagles on Sunday, four shots ahead of second-placed Brett Rumford.

All eyes were on Nicolas Colsaerts, who needed a op two finish to force his way into Europe’s Ryder Cup team at the expense of Martin Kaymer but he will have to rely on a wildcard if he is to make it into Jose Mari Olazabal’s team.

Colsaerts is favourite for one of Olazabal’s wildcards along with Ian Poulter but they face competition from Padraig Harrington.

After a wholesome fortnight of Olympic sport, the juggernaut that is Premier League football rolled back into town as if it had never been away with the start of the 2012/13 season.

Yesterday champions Manchester City came through a sticky second-half against Southampton, winning 3-2 after goals from Ricky Lambert and Steven Davis had put Saints ahead in their first top flight game for seven years.

Chelsea turned in a below-par performance but still managed to beat Wigan 2-0 with new boy Eden Hazard picking up both assists on his debut.

Steve Clarke’s West Brom side gave a 3-0 beating to the team who sacked him as assistant manager at the end of last season, in what was a tough opening day for new Liverpool boss Brendan Rogers.

Daniel Agger was sent off for a trip in front of goal and although that penalty was missed, Peter Odemwingie put away a second with Zoltan Gera and Romelu Lukaku finding the net either side of his penalty.

Swansea and Fulham both handed out 5-0 thrashings, to QPR and Norwich respectively.

South Africa are on course to take the world number one test ranking from England in the third test at Lord’s.

After the visitors’ built a solid second innings score of 351, thanks in part to Hashim Amla’s 121, Vernon Philander dismissed Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook both lbw. England finished the day on 16/2 and require 330 more runs to win.

Bradford Bulls reclaimed their place in the Super League playoff places with a comfortbale 34-12 win away at Huddersfield.

The Bulls had dropped out of the playoff positions after they were docked six points for entering into administration but returned to eighth place as Hull KR lost to Wakefield in another dramatic win for the Wildcats.

Paul Sykes kicked a last-minute drop goal to win the match for Wakefield in a repeat of last weekend’s denouement against St Helens, when he also kicked a match-winning drop goal in the dying seconds.

Roger Federer won his fifth Cincinnati Open title, beating Novak Djokovic in surprisingly comfortable circumstances in straight sets, 6-0 7-6 (9-7).

Li Na won the ladies title, coming back form behind to beat Angelique Kerber 1-6 6-3 6-1.

Sergio Garcia responded to dropping out of the places for a spot on Europes’ Ryder Cup team by moving into the lead ahead of the final round of the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.

The Spaniard missed the cut at last weekend’s USPGA Championship but bounced back to take a one shot lead ahead of Tim Clark and Bud Cauley.

The flame was extinguished on the Olympic Games for another four years on Sunday night, but not before Team GB took their gold medal haul to 29, the most since London hosted the Games in 1908.

Mo Farah completed a long distance double on Saturday evening, winning the 5000m final to go with the 10000m gold he won at the end of the first week. Earlier, Ed McKeever won in the men’s K1-200 metres canoeing final.

The final two gold medals were won in the Excel Arena in Greenwich where the finals of the men’s boxing were taking place. On Saturday night Luke Campbell beat Irishman John Joe Nevin in the bantamweight final and Anthony Joshua took gold in the super-heavyweight final yesterday afternoon.

With Wembley having been used for the Olympic football tournaments, Sunday’s Community Shield was played at Villa Park. League champions Manchester City triumphed in the traditional curtain-raiser to the new Premier League season, winning 3-2.

Fernando Torres opened the scoring for the FA Cup winners, but Branislav Ivanovic was shown a red card for a reckless challenge on Aleksandr Kolarov just before half time and in the second half City made the most of their one-man advantage.

City scored three goals in the space of 12 minutes early in the second half to take control of the game and they held on despite Ryan Bertrand’s late tap-in.

Rory McIlroy won the USPGA Championship at Kiawah Island last night, finishing a huge eight strokes ahead of the field on thirteen under.

McIlroy won his second major ahead of Englishman David Lynn who finished a surprising second in his first major for nine years.

Justin Rose and Ian Poulter finished equal third along with Keegan Bradley and Carl Pettersson on four under as two of the four Britons to finish in the top six.

Bradford closed the gap between themselves and eighth-placed Hull KR, beating them 32-26 on Friday evening to trail by just points difference.

Jamie Langley scored twice to help his side to a hugely important win, which puts them close to making the playoffs despite a season fraught with crippling financial and a six-point penalty for entering administration.

Second-placed Warrington registered an emphatic 30-10 win over league-leaders Wigan to emphasise their title-winning credentials in advance of the playoffs.

Lancashire continued their fine run of form in the ECB40, increasing their lead at the top of their group with a simple nine-wicket win over Netherlands.

Defending champions Surrey collapsed against Durham, losing by 142 runs to lose ground near the top of their group.

Usain Bolt cemented his place as the greatest sprinter of all time as he successfully defended his 100m title. Bolt posted an Olympic record time of 9.63 to beat countryman Yohan Blake and American Justin Gatlin into second and third respectively.

British athletes enjoyed their share of the glory in the Olympic Stadium on Saturday as part Team GB’s most successful day in Olympic history on Saturday. Team GB added six gold medals to their tally on Saturday, three of those coming within a glorious 45-minute period in the Olympic Stadium.

First Jessica Ennis won gold in the heptathlon, storming to victory in her 800m heat, while Greg Rutherford took first place in the men’s long jump. Mo Farah completed the hat-trick with victory in the men’s 10,000m final.

Earlier, Katherine Copeland and Sophie Hosking had started off Britain’s gold rush, winning in the lightweight women’s double sculls and the British team led from the front to win in the men’s coxless fours final.

On Sunday, Ben Ainslie made history by winning his fourth consecutive gold medal. He had trailed Denmark’s Jonas Hogh-Christensen for much of the week’s competition but finished ahead of the Dane in the medal race to win the Finn class and become the most-decorated sailor in Olympic history.

Andy Murray went some way to making amends for defeat in the Wimbledon final four weeks ago by winning gold in the Olympic competition. He beat the man who defeated him, Roger Federer, at the scene of that defeat, winning in straight sets 6-2 6-1 6-4.

Murray returned to the court to contest the mixed doubles final with partner Laura Robson and despite dominating the first set, the British pair lost out on a champions’ tie-break 2-6 6-3 10-8 to Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.

Christine Ohuruogou mounted a late charge in the women’s 400m final, coming close to repeating the upset she staged in Beijing but had to settle for silver behind Sanya Richards-Ross of the USA.

Rain disrupted day four of the second test between England and South Africa, making a draw the most likely result going into the final day. England finished on 425 all out after Matt Prior’s 68 built on Kevin Pietersen’s score of 149 after South African-born batsman lost his wicket to Morne Morkel on the second ball of the day.

South Africa had notched up a first-innings score of 419 and they lead by 33 runs after scoring 33 for no wicket before the rain brought play to a close.

In the Super League, Bradford beat Widnes 38-26 to keep their playoff hopes alive despite their six-point deduction. Hull KR just lost out to Leeds 24-25 to leave the door open for Bradford. Wigan maintained their excellent form, notching up at least 40 points for the fourth consecutive match as they beat Hull 48-10.

London Broncos came back from 21-0 down to record only their fourth win of the season. The league’s basement side ran in seven second-half tries to beat Salford 40-28.

Sir Steve Redgrave passed the Olympic flame on to a group of young athletes to light the cauldron in the Olympic Stadium and signal the start of the 2012 Olympic Games on Friday evening.

Team GB have got off to a relatively slow start as far as medals are concerned, though. Lizzie Armitstead won silver in the women’s road race yesterday, and Rebecca Adlington snuck into the final of the women’s 400m freestyle but raised her game to win a bronze.

On Saturday Mark Cavendish and his teammates were unable to recover after losing ground early on in the men’s road race.

Andy Murray confidently progressed past Stanlisav Wawrinka in the first round of the men’s tennis competition 6-3 6-4 on Wimbledon’s Centre Court. Novak Djokovic recovered from losing the first set to beat Italian Fabio Fognini. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was also taken to three sets by his opponent, Thomaz Bellucci.

Agnieszka Radwanska suffered a shock defeat to Julia Goerges of Germany and

Maria Sharapova beat Shahar Peer of Israel 6-2 6-0.

At Wembley, Britain’s footballers followed up a disappointing draw against Senegal with a 3-1 win over the UAE. One of the tournament favourites Spain went out after defeat to Honduras.

Lewis Hamilton led throughout to win the Hungarian Grand Prix ahead of the Lotus pair Kimi Raikkonon and Romain Grosjean.

Fernando Alonso finished ahead of Mark Webber to increase his lead in the drivers’ championship to 40 points. Victory puts Hamilton up to fourth, 47 points of the lead.

Wigan beat Castleford 40-16 to maintain their three-point lead at the top of the Super League with one round of matches remaining. Warrington kept up the pressure on the leaders with a 50-22 thrashing of Bradford, whose chances of making the playoffs were dealt a blow as Hull KR beat Widnes 32-26.

Bradley Wiggins became the first Briton to win the Tour de France in it’s 109–year history. He finished three minutes and 21 seconds ahead of teammate and compatriot Chris Froome as Mark Cavendish won the final stage for the fourth year in a rown.

Ernie Els took advantage of a shambolic final few holes from long-term tournament leader Adam Scott to win the Open, ten years after the 42-year-old he first won the competition. Els sunk a 15-foot putt to birdie the 18th hole and finish on seven-under, two-under for the day, and made up seven shots on Scott bogeyed each of the last four holes to end on 75, one stroke behind Els.

Brandt Snedeker and Tiger Woods finished joint-third on three-under, with British pair Graeme McDowell and Luke Donald one behind them.

Fernando Alonso extended his lead at the top of the Formula One drivers’ championship to 34 points as he won from pole at the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim. Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button ran Alonso close, but neither really came close to challenging the Spaniard. Last year’s winner Lewis Hamilton, who was celebrating his 100th Grand Prix, suffered a puncture early on to ruin his chances.

In cricket, England go into the final day of the first test against South Africa as they try to salvage a draw at the Oval. The visitors declared on 637-2 after Hashim Amla became the first South African to score a triple century to help his side build a lead of 252 runs before England lost four wickets before the close for just 102 runs.

James Tomkins scored four tries as Wigan maintained their three-point lead at the top of the Super League table with a comfortable 44-6 win over basement side London Broncos.

Leeds beat Bradford 34-16 to move consolidate their playoff place and eight and ninth-placed rivals Hull and Hull KR face each other this evening in what could be an important match indetermining who makes the playoffs. Warrington stay second after holding off Castleford to win 40-26 and St Helens beat Catalan Dragons 20-15 to move ahead of their opponents into third.

Jeev Milkha Singh won the Scottish Open yesterday evening in a playoff with Francesco Molinari. Singh, ranked 192 in the world, took the last remaining qualifier place at next weekend’s Open after shooting 67 to overhaul Molinari’s overnight lead.

Scotland’s Mark Warren had looked to be in control approaching the final few holes but a double bogey on 15 proved disastrous.

Leeds shocked Wigan in Rugby League’s Challenge Cup semi-final to set up a meeting with Warrington in the Wembley showpiece, their third successive appearance in the final. Two tries each from Ryan Hall, Ben Jones-Bishop and Zak Hardaker helped Leeds make up for last season’s defeat against Wigan in the final in a 39-28 win

Warrington scored five tries to Huddersfield’s one to win 33-6 at the Galpharm stadium, Brett Hodgson scoring 17 points for the Wolves.

Amir Khan suffered a fourth-round knockout at the hands of Danny Garcia inLas Vegas on Saturday to take the Englishman’s WBA light-welterweight title to add to his own WBC title. Khan had been awarded the title just days before the fight after Lamont Peterson, who had defeated Khan in a fight mired in controversy, had been found guilty of doping.

David Haye knocked out Dereck Chisora in the fifth round of their grudge match at Upton Park on Saturday. Haye’s speed and power was too much for the one-dimensional Chisora and now the talk is of Haye facing WBC world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, whose brother Wladimir defeated Haye in his most recent fight last year.

Rain affected a few of the weekend’s Pro 40 matches but Hampshire were able to maintain their lead at the top of their group with a four-wicket victory over Durham, Leicestershire beat Worcestershire by the same result.

Derbyshire beat Unicorns by 35 runs and Nottinghamshire beat Surrey by five wickets.

Andy Murray’s dreams of becoming the first British man to win a singles title at Wimbledon for 76 years were dashed by seven-time champion Roger Federer.

Federer won his first major title in two-and-a-half years in four sets 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 to join Pete Sampras and William Renshaw on seven Wimbledon titles and return to the top of the world rankings.

The weight of expectation didn’t seem to affect Murray as the match got underway as he raced into the lead, breaking Federer’s serve in the opening game to help him towards a first set win.

Federer responded, though, and deserved the win having been the better player for the majority of the match thereafter.

Serena Williams won a fifth singles title at Wimbledon, beating Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1 5-7 6-2.

One Brit who tasted success during finals weekend was Jonathan Marray, who won the men’s doubles with partner Frederik Nielsen having entered the competition as a wildcard.

Marray and Nielsen overcame fifth seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau in five sets on Saturday after conquering Bob and Mike Bryan in Thursday’s semi-final.

Mark Webber won yesterday’s British Grand Prix in exciting circumstances. Webber passed Fernando Alonso with just four laps remaining and held on to the lead, despite Alonso having led for much of the race.

Vettel finished behind Alonso in third, followed by Felipe Massa. Lewis Hamilton came a disappointing eighth with teammate Jenson Button finishing tenth.

Webber cut Alonso’s lead in the drivers’ championship to 13 points. Hamilton is 37 behind in fourth.

St Helens scraped past Widnes with a late Josh Jones try converted by Lee Gaskell to win 24-23 and move up to third in the Super League.

Saints remain behind Wigan, who trounced Wakefield 52-10 on Sunday, and Warrington, who play Catalan Dragons tonight.

Ian Poulter dropped two shots on the final two holes of the French Open to gift Marcel Siem the win. Poulter dropped down to joint-fourth behind Francesco Molinari and Raphael Jacquelin.

Bradley Wiggins retained the yellow jersey in the Tour de France as Thibaut Pinot won stage eight of the race. Wiggins held off last year’s winner Cadel Evans to maintain his lead by ten seconds.

Spain made history in last night’s Euro 2012 final, becoming the first side to win three successive major international tournaments with a 4-0 win over Italy in Kiev.

Italy were outclassed from start to finish by the Spanish, who opening the scoring as early as the 14th minute through David Silva. Jordi Alba’s surging run was spotted by Xavi Hernandez and the full-back finished past Buffon in the Italian goal for his side’s second just before half-time.

Italy were forced to play with ten men from as early as the 60th minute when their third and final substitute Thiago Motta pulled up with a hamstring injury minutes after coming on. Spain showed no sign of letting up, though, and Chelsea duo Fernando Torres and Juan Mata completed the rout.

Australia’s tour of England got off to a bad start over the weekend. England won the first one-day international by 15 runs at Lords on Friday and followed it up with victory at the Oval on Sunday.

Ravi Bopara scored 82 from 85 balls after Ian Bell’s 75 to put England within two runs of victory before being run out by Brett Lee. Eoin Morgan finished the job for England to win with more than four overs to spare.

Andy Murray made it into the second week of Wimbledon after a late-night win over Marcos Baghdatis. Murray came though 7-5 3-6 7-5 6-1 on Friday night, finishing at 11.02pm. Murray will play Marin Cilic who beat Sam Querrey in what was the second-longest match in Wimbledon history.

Jo Pavey won a silver medal in the final of the 10,000m at the European Championships in Helsinki yesterday, behind Ana Dulce Felix of Portugal.

The men’s 4x400m team earnt a silver medal as well, but the 4x100m team suffered embarrassment yet again. Christian Malcolm couldn’t pass the baton to Dwain Chambers within the specified area.

Welsh golfer Jamie Donaldson took his first European Tour title, winning the Irish Open at Portrush on Sunday by four shots, shooting 65 in his final round.

The first stage of this year’s Tour de France was won by tour debutant Peter Sagan in a sprint ahead of Fabian Cancellara and Edvald Boasson Hagen. Cancellara maintained the yellow jersey, seven seconds ahead of Bradley Wiggins.
