Amazing Grace

David Murrow (author of ‘Why Men Hate Going To Church’) has discovered a church that has taken on the challenge of appealing to men with amazing results. Grace United Methodist learned how to grow again – without abandoning its traditions. You won’t find a drum set in this church – but you will find men. Lots of men.

It can be really difficult for church leaders to attract men into their churches, and even tougher for female church leaders, but here we have an example that many can learn from.

Watch this short film and see what you might be able to apply to your own church

Iron Sharpens Iron, Manchester

We recently held our first CVM/New Wine Men’s Day “Iron Sharpens Iron”. Here’s a quick 2 minute snapshot of what happened. The next event will be in Manchester on Sat 21 Jan 2012. Click here to find out more.

Rob’s Round Up

Manchester United are just one point from a record 19th top-flight title after beating their nearest rivals Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Captain Nemanja Vidic’s header followed up Javier Hernandez’s first-minute strike and rendered Frank Lampard’s second-half goal in vain.

Arsenal and Manchester City, who are third and fourth respectively, suffered surprise defeats. Arsenal lost 3-1 at Stoke and City 2-1 away to Everton.

Fifth-placed Tottenham could not fully take advantage as they were held 1-1 at home to Blackpool and Liverpool will go above Spurs if they avoid defeat at Fulham on Monday evening.

Wolves climbed out of the bottom three at Blackpool’s expense with a 3-1 win at home to Black Country rivals West Brom. Bottom side West Ham were held 1-1 at home to Blackburn and second-bottom Wigan drew 1-1 away to Aston Villa.

Elsewhere, Newcastle beat Birmingham 2-1 and Sunderland saw off Bolton by the same scoreline.

Queens Park Rangers lifted the Championship trophy after the Football Association confirmed they would not be docked points this season or next over the transfer of Alejandro Faurlin.

Leicester will host Northampton and Gloucester will travel to Saracens in Rugby Union’s Premiership play-off semi-finals following the conclusion of the regular season on Saturday.

Leicester topped the table after coming from behind to beat London Irish 32-23, a result that still saw Irish qualify for next season’s European Cup.

Saracens saw off Harlequins 16-13, meaning Quins must beat Stade Francais in the European Challenge Cup final or rely on Northampton winning the European Cup to gain entry to the senior competition next season.

Gloucester thumped Sale 68-17 and Northampton came from 24-3 down to gain a 31-24 win over Leeds, who finished bottom of the table. However, they will only be relegated if Worcester win the Championship play-off final against Cornish Pirates, whose stadium does not meet Premiership criteria.

Leeds finished level on points with Newcastle, who lost 42-12 to fifth-placed Bath. Exeter finished a creditable eighth, a place above Wasps whom they defeated 21-8.

In Rugby League, all the Super League sides apart from Crusaders, who lost 30-20 at Leeds, are through to the Challenge Cup fifth round for which the draw is as follows: Huddersfield v Catalan Dragons; Warrington v Swinton; Leeds v Harlequins; St Helens v Featherstone; Wakefield v Castleford; Bradford v Wigan; Widnes v Hull; Salford v Hull KR.

Somerset, Surrey and Northamptonshire kept up 100% records in Cricket’s 40-over domestic competition with wins over Gloucestershire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire respectively.

Essex, who defeated the Unicorns, remain unbeaten and there were also victories for Glamorgan over Lancashire, Derbyshire over Worcestershire, Sussex over Middlesex and Yorkshire over Kent.

Sebastian Vettel extended his lead at the top of the Formula One standings with victory at the Turkish Grand Prix. Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber was second and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso third.

Finally, golf legend Severiano Ballesteros died aged 54 following a protracted battle with cancer. The Spaniard won five majors and 87 titles overall in a glittering career, which also included successes in the Ryder Cup as both player and captain.

Movember

The Mo (slang for moustache) and November come together each year for Movember. It raises funds for The Prostate Cancer Charity (TPCC) and this year the whole CVM staff team are joining in. If you’d like to make a donation to our team, click here.

If you’ve not heard of Movember, here’s what it’s all about (from the Movember website):

movember

“Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st  clean shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month.  The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men.  Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days.

The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia.  The plan was simple – to bring the moustache back as a bit of a joke and do something for men’s health. No money was raised in 2003, but the guys behind the Mo realised the potential a moustache had in generating conversations about men’s health.  Inspired by the women around them and all they had done for breast cancer, the Mo Bros set themselves on a course to create a global men’s health movement.

Movember2010 StyleGuideIn 2004 the campaign evolved and focused on raising awareness and funds for the number one cancer affecting men – prostate cancer. 432 Mo Bros joined the movement that year, raising $55,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia – representing the single largest donation they had ever received.

The Movember moustache has grown year on year since then, expanding to the UK, US, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain, South Africa, The Netherlands and Finland.

In 2009, global participation of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas climbed to 255,755, with over one million donors raising £26 Million (GBP equivalent) for Movember’s global beneficiary partners.

The funds raised through Movember’s UK campaign benefit the The Prostate Cancer Charity (TPCC), the UK’s leading prostate cancer charity.

The money raised as a result of Movember is channelled by our men’s health partner into a number of world class and innovative education, support, research and awareness initiatives.

WaxStampThe success of Movember can be directly attributed to the more than 627,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas who have supported our cause since 2003.  Movember is sincerely grateful for their efforts and appreciate all they do.

For those of you new to Movember, we challenge you to join us in changing the face of men’s health.”
